Studio II images

Just some images from my last studio class at UArts.  They are about my feelings of being overwhelmed by the mess in our house when we were moving in.  We actually packed up and moved everything in the week before finals, so I had to do all of this in one week.  Not easy.  I was trying to merely use the studio strobes to get the feeling of real room lighting, but without the dim shadows, light fall-off, and tungsten yellow-orange color cast.  For some reason, I felt the need to get a window into every shot.  It's nice that by looking out the windows and seeing light outside, the room is expected to appear darker inside.  It is simply not expected and therefore a bit cinematic--not real. Perhaps it's the fact that I love the old metal windows in this house.

I cant tell you how much I enjoy these photographs, and for so many different reasons too.

First of all, I like what you said about the pix having a cinematic feel because the interior isnt dark like you would expect. It does give it that fabricated feel that I really like.

Second, your renditions of being overwhelmed, rising above, sleeping below and being consumed by all the clutter were witty, fun and very clever. I think my favorite was the one of you sleeping under the bed because there was too much shit on top of it. I mean, you could've slept on the couch, right? But putting yourself under the bed made so much more of a statement. As for hilarity, I dont know if I could pic a favorite. They're all great.

Third reason is the lighting is so wonderful. My studio shots are always so harsh. I really need to work on that. Course, there will be studio lighting classes coming up eventually so I will get instruction on it, but I cant wait that long! LOL!

And the fourth reason I love the pix is because I get to see you and your new house! YAY! You look great, and your hair is so beautiful. Its so long now. I love it. And the house looks amazing. I love the windows. I could shoot those and the light falling through them all day long.

Wow, thanks Erin! I had a blast shooting these, even though it was super rushed. Most of what I needed was right where I needed it. It was just a matter of visualizing something then setting up the lights. The lighting here is soft because of the soft box over the strobe. You can never have enough soft boxes--different sizes, lengths, etc--and I definitely want to get at least one when I buy my own strobes. For now, the school has plenty.

I really love the way you're learning to talk about photography and concepts and such. You've learned sooooo much in such a short period of time. I don't think I learned so much so early on. Though I don't know what you mean about me looking great--you can't see much more than my feet, hair, and my ever expanding backside. haha! One good thing about getting older, you learn to laugh at the flaws and play them up rather than obsess over them. My hair, by the way, lost several inches in length the last time I went to get it done. It's kind of a longish bob now.

I can't wait to see what you play with when your studio classes start. You learn product shooting, portraiture, cinematic stuff--so much fun!!
